The ABCs of being a college freshman

 Author:  Belkhir Taysir

Moving on is the hardest thing to do, change always brings with it a new adventure. To be more specific, I will focus on the transition from high school to university, because it is well known that college is more difficult and requires a keen awareness of what to do.

Challenging experience:

College courses are generally much more difficult than high school courses, with fewer hours in class but a lot more homework and hard work outside of class such as reading, labs and exercises. As a result, studying is no longer something you do only between dinner and bedtime, it’s rather a complete transformation in student's life. In fact, some students will be experience home sickness, missing their family, friends, and pets. They will long for the familiar routines and structures.

Family support and its influence on college students:

Students in a college often receive financial, emotional, spiritual, from family members. Many students stated that independence from their families has affected them throughout their college experience. This support helped them in achieving a healthy mental state. However, when the options are precarious, it appears to be the antebellum period. You have a penchant for a domain when your family is attempting to persuade you to do something else; in other words, your family’s influence and power force you to choose your specialization.

College life throws a lot of challenges your way. You have arrived in a place full of unfamiliar faces where you must mingle. It teaches us to socialize and form our own opinions, we even begin to think critically. Students learn to exercise their free will in college, and as a result, they become more self-assured and composed. Moreover, freedom and responsibility are inextricably linked. There is a much more freedom, which means you must be more responsible and hold yourself accountable. Your academic performance in college is far more in your control than it was in high school. Professors won’t nag you to complete assignments or hold your hand. You need to take charge of your responsibilities and manage your time effectively. Also, relying on yourself is a great step to take; in other words, students who are overly reliant on parents or a particular small group of friends, often struggle to adjust to college. There, they must be independent self- starters or they will struggle to manage the responsibilities.
